Annual maintenance is critical to our systems for flood protection. The annual summer maintenance programme will commence in July to remove vegetation from all of the 448 km of Board maintained watercourse.
Environmental legislation means that we would not normally undertake any work prior to 15th July each year to avoid disturbance of nesting sites. The Board is aware that this can be a problem when weather conditions are such that there is an increased amount of weedgrowth early in the year and water levels are high. A list of watercourses protecting urban areas and high risk agricultural land has therefore been prepared and these watercourses are monitored and, if necessary, work to clear the centre of the channel is undertaken to maintain the flow of water and ensure that properties are protected.
