Doncaster East Internal Drainage Board Doncaster East Internal Drainage Board covers a total area of 21,955 hectares and forms part of a wider catchment of 34,860 hectares that drains to and includes the district. Within this area, 14,580 hectares comprise agricultural land, while a further 7,375 hectares consist of non agricultural land. The district’s water management infrastructure includes 7 water level control structures, 313.3 kilometres of maintained watercourses, and 26 stations, all of which contribute to the effective regulation of water levels and the ongoing protection of the surrounding landscape. Anderby Drainage Museum The museum is situated in a drainage board pumping station built in 1945 which houses two Ruston 10HRC twin cylinder oil engines. These engines then drive Allen Gwynnes 42” centrifugal pumps which are capable of pumping 4,500 litres of water per second. The station was built to drain some 9,200 acres of land most of which is below sea level. Anderby Pumping station being built 1945—1946 The new pumping station situated on the north bank of the present basin was commissioned in 1992. It replaced the two oil powered engines and pumps with three electrically driven pumps. The cost of the replacement station was £650,000 and there was a significant increase in the pumping capacity. The 10HRC engines together with the Gwynnes pumps are maintained by the Board to act as standby pumps in case of a failure in the new station. Our systems are monitored remotely via telemetry to ensure they are operating efficiently and providing the correct levels of protection. The system is checked daily by the Duty Officer although an alarm will trigger if there are any issues with the pumps, weedscreens or water levels. Although the pumping stations are fully automated and we have the ability to alter levels and turn on/off some of the pumps remotely, there is still a need to attend site on occasion to clear a blockage or reset a pump and our operatives are on hand to do this should the need arise. During a major flood event the Control Room at Manby will be opened and manned for the duration of the event to oversee and coordinate response to incidents and commitment of resources to other Boards or external agencies and partners. The Duty Officers and Senior Managers can access the system remotely and get an overall picture across the affected areas ensuring that resources are deployed to best effect.
